India is the second most populous country in the world (China is top of the list) with 1.21 billion people, which represents more than a sixth of the world’s population. And this number is on the rise: the projections show that by 2025, India will surpass China and become the most populous country in the planet.

Hand in hand with the large demographics is the fact that India is also one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Growth isn’t necessary bad if it is done in a sustainable way. And that’s the mantra that a company in India called OliveTrips is trying to follow by facilitating carpooling. In their website they promise financial gain and new friendships. Who can resist?

OliveTrips helps people convert their cars (or bikes) into a High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) by assist- ing you in the search for people to make good use of unoccupied seats with other like-minded per- sons travelling on the same path at the same time, creating an enviro-friendly trip with the added benefit of drastically reducing travel cost.

Registered users can form carpool or bikepool for journeys to their workplaces or for attending classes, etc. Car owners (or even taxi riders) can choose to offer seats to other registered seat seekers as long as they are both comfortable with the choice. Carpool members are absolutely free to choose their fellow travelers.

To register you need a mobile number and a Google account and then you will have access to this clever service that provides also real-time updates through SMS about developments of the user’s posted trips, highly advanced path matching technology and intelligent mapping. The website also provides an EcoReport which reflects savings in terms of fuel, money and carbon footprints. Trip contribution is mutually agreed among the participating members.
