To live a greener life, one must embrace a number of new daily habits like recycling and using fewer resources, thus saving the planet. An ecological conscious life includes the changing the way we decorate our houses. It is not difficult to be an eco-friendly decorator. Make your house and the world a prettier place to live!

“Green” textiles: In order to decorate in an environmentally-friendly way, carefully read labels from all textiles that we use to heat and decorate our homes. Choose towels, sheets, blankets, blinds and carpets made exclusively from organic or recycled materials like cotton, wool, linen and bamboo or natural fibers such as the sisal, sea herbs or coconut fibers.

No plastics: Most homes contain many items made with PVC – a non-biodegradable plastic that has substances harmful to our health, according to recent studies. Whenever possible, avoid PVC when choosing curtains, bathroom accessories, kitchen utensils, chairs and decorative and organizational objects. A good alternative is melamine, a recycled plastic.

“Green” walls: Paints traditionally used to decorate walls are full of chemicals that are harmful to your health and the environment. Therefore, when painting, choose environmentally-friendly paint, in other words, paint that has been recycled or produced with a milk base or made from biodegradable material. If you opt for wallpaper , always use recycled paper!

“Green” floors: Always select recycled or ecologically sustainable wood, such as eucalyptus, bamboo, and polished concrete, stone, linoleum, cork and ceramic tiles made from recycled glass. These materials are produced with natural and renewable resources.

Natural light: One of the most significant ways to make your home green is to use natural light. Buy candles made from soy. These are, by far, the friendliest to the environment.

Fresh air: Flowers can bring life and natural beauty into your home. Flowers and plants filter the air and naturally freshen the environment better than any artificial air purifier. Fill the house with gerberas, palm trees, philodendrons and breathe deeply. If you have the space, plant a garden and enjoy a greener life in the open air.

Decorative recycling: Before tossing something in the trash, consider whether the object could be reused if painted or refurbished. If you can use your trash in another way or if your friends or family can use it, save it. Use the same reasoning whenever you intend to buy something new for the house. Try to give a completely new function to the old objects. Alternatively, shop at flea markets to find and reuse special vintage pieces: recycle with style!
